Damascus Lava by Andy Haas |
The first "pimped" Spyderco Lava I recall seeing, was done by the famous potterma. He added a wood scale to the handles of the SS Lava. Turned out beautiful, like all his "pimp jobs" do!
I was then given a "head's up" by some of my Knifebro's regarding a Damascus Lava. So I followed the links, and WOW! After putting my eyes back into my head, and wiping the drool from my mouth and keyboard, I managed to "meet" the maker of this Damascus Lava. A fine gentleman from Germany named Andy Haas. Apparently, Andy has been forging knives from a very young age, and the Damascus blade he made for the Lava is of his own making. In Andy's own words:
"The damascus was my very first large package I made. It contents 3 diffrent kind of steel: old files, saw blade for wood ( in german "Gattersäge" ) and 1.2842 ( O2 ). It was a package of nearly 2.5 kilo! I did it with an other blacksmith together and everyone get the half of the finished damaskus.
It has 120 layers in the original thickness, for the Lava I had to grind it thinner. Now it will be maybe 80 layers.
I forged this damascus on a 100kg-Hartmann-Lufthammer (pneumatic hammer with an hammer weight from 100 kg!), that rocks!
The piece I had used for the Lava was the very last piece from this large package. I order a Lava and did it, thats all!"
Enjoy the pics everyone, and mahalo Andy! Keep up the great work!
